I must admit I am feeling a bit of Christmas sadness. This used to be the time of year when you were filled with cheer and wanted to share it with others, but I have not experienced much cheer this Christmas season.

Christmas Tree Card Holder

I have a Christmas Tree Card Holder. In years past, it would be filled from the tippy top of the tree to the bottom of the trunk. This year, there are hardly any cards on the tree.  I can count them on one hand, literally.  (See below. The card at the base of the tree is a Thanksgiving card.) I know I was late getting my cards out this year, but it’s the 20th. There are only two more mail days before Christmas Eve (Saturday and Monday.) At this point, I don’t know if anyone else will be mailing cards. This makes me so sad.

Christmas Tradition

When did this beloved tradition stop? Our mailboxes would be overflowing with cards and holiday letters. But with the advent of Social Media, I guess that has stopped.  I know sending out cards yearly is a lot of work and expensive. But many people who don’t get to see one another often count on receiving those cards. Not all of us are on social media. What about our aging population?  You know, those individuals in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or just living alone in an apartment or condo? What about those who have little to no family? Getting these cards in the mail was a way to stay connected and spread some Christmas cheer. Couldn’t we all use a little more Christmas cheer instead of Christmas Sadness?

I fear that this will be my last time sending out Christmas cards. If no one cares, then why should I? Is that selfish of me? I like the tradition, but I don’t like being forgotten. Right now, that is how I feel. I understand that others may struggle this time of year, so I want to send out cards to bring them some lightness and love through the cards I send. But what about me? I struggle every day. But because I am out of sight, I am out of mind.

So, yes, I am going through a period of Christmas Sadness. What about you?
