I went into reading A Love to Call Mine by Merrillee Whren without any preconceived ideas. I did not read the synopsis or any of the reviews so I had no idea of the story’s focus. It allows me to be more in tune when I read. Also, it reminds me to not to rush through a reading. At this time of year, I think it is important to slow down and savor things a little bit more.
Reading with a Different Set of Eyes
Once I got started, I knew that I would have to look at this with a very different set of eyes as I usually don’t read books containing difficult subject matters, especially ones that affect me personally. Health and family seem to be at the forefront of my mind lately.
More than just your typical romance novel, A Love to Call Mine by Merrillee Whren is a story whereby the author takes a deeply emotional and gut-wrenching topic and treats it with the sensitivity that it deserves. It also weaves in another deeply personal issue of mine and that is finding one’s birth family.
A Love to Call Mine Reaches Deep into Our Hearts
Ms. Whren used her literary prowess to reach deep into the hearts of her readers, especially mine. I love the fact that she did not allow the main characters to fall for each other immediately. Without the initial antagonism, the story would have fallen flat, and lessened the desire I had to put the book down and walk away from it because parts of it were just a little too close to home for me.
Was God calling me to read this story? I’d like to think so. He has an uncanny way of leading me down a path that I would have preferred to by-pass altogether. A Love to Call Mine by Merrillee Whren is one those stories that is meant to be read slowly and savored to truly appreciate and understand that God really has a plan for all of us and that we should trust in Him.
